A lot of people in Indonesia prefer to eat with hand, especially at home. However, it’s not oftenly seen that people eat with hand in public space such as restaurant etc. In restaurants they use spoon & fork. What about foreigners? They are sometimes curious about eating with hand and practice it by themself.
Indonesians say eating with hand is more pleasurable. They also believe this way of eating will give advantage to health due to ‘something in the hand’ that got swallowed along with meal.
Ariel, the lead vocal of Noah Band, also a prominent singer songwriter, gave credit to Otong Koil, the lead vocal of Koil Band, Ahmad Dhani, the leader of Dewa (19) Band, and Piyu, guitaris of Padi Band as Indonesia’s Best Songwriters.
Ahmad Dhani, in Indonesia, who doesn’t know that legend? But Otong Koil, is only popular in limited audience of rock music. He and his Koil Band earn their living from business more than from music. Koil Band sells hair tonic, jamu, food/restaurant, tshirt etc. Their rock music is not mainstream that’s why financially they are not as successful as Ahmad Dhani and Dewa Band that choose popular music — with some rock touch.
For Otong, besides melody, his lyrics is special. This is what impresses Ariel.
The following is a collaboration between Ahmad Dhani and Otong Koil
Last but not least, Piyu’s song: Kasih Tak Sampai, sung by Fadli.

Jakarta Achieves City of Literature Status, There are 3 Other UNESCO Creative Cities in Indonesia
Jakarta has been named the World Literary City by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). There are 3 others in Indonesia. Compiled by detikTravel, Sunday (11/14/2021), the announcement was made through the official unesco.org website on November 8, 2021 ago. Jakarta is listed as one of 49 other cities in the world that are part of UNESCO’s Creative City Network in 2021. Regarding this, the Governor of DKI Jakarta Anies Baswedan also gave his appreciation. Moreover, Anies has also been the Minister of Education and Culture who is full of literature matters.
“We feel very proud of this UNESCO election. As a city, Jakarta must be built sustainably,” said Anies in a written statement, Tuesday (9/11).
Anies highlighted the importance of sustainable infrastructure development and the quality of human resources. According to him, this is what drives the progress of the city of Jakarta. “The infrastructure development that we have done so far is important to make Jakarta a developed city. But we also improve the quality of its people. This is what will drive the sustainable development process. With Jakarta chosen as the City of World Literature, this will be an important driver for us to continue to improve the human aspect,” he explained.
The former Minister of Education and Culture explained that Jakarta has a long history of literacy. From the royal, colonial period, to the early days of Indonesia’s independence and now, Jakarta has become an important center for books and literacy. Thus, Anies hopes that through the election of Jakarta as the City of World Literature, it is hoped that it will continue to be developed in the future.
“We remember that it was in Jakarta that the first newspaper was founded, the first book publisher was established, Balai Pustaka, and the Indonesian Publishers Association (IKAPI) was also established in Jakarta. Even Indonesia’s independence began with the knitting of words and sentences composed by the founders of this nation in Jakarta and then spread to all corners of the republic,” added Governor Anies.
“With the election as a World Literary City, we ensure that we will continue to maintain and develop this strong historical root in the future,” he continued.
The daily chairman of the Jakarta Book City Committee, Laura Bangun Prinsloo, said that the proposal for Jakarta as the City of Letters had been submitted since 2019 by looking at the literacy potential and active bookkeeping activities in Jakarta. “We are truly honored to be part of the network of creative world cities. We have submitted this proposal to the provincial government for a long time (2019) because we see the potential for literacy and active bookkeeping activities in Jakarta. Since then, we have prepared dossier (document files) for UNESCO by involving many parties, including bookmakers, institutions, and literacy organizations and other ministries. This is a very good opportunity for the Provincial Government together with book stakeholders to be able to develop aspects of the City of Jakarta as a city of literature and literacy, “said Laura.
Every year UNESCO routinely gives predicates to a number of creative cities in the world. Just before the title of World Literature City was given to Jakarta and two other cities, there were other titles given to three other cities in Indonesia.
In 2014, UNESCO also awarded the City of Crafts and Folk Arts to Pekalongan City in Central Java. Then in 2015, the title of City of Design was also given by UNESCO to the Flower City of Bandung.
Then no less prestigious, the title of City of Music was also pinned by UNESCO in Ambon City in 2019. In total, there are four creative cities in Indonesia curated by UNESCO. Proud!
