Wearing a peci used to be an ancient Israelites’ tradition. It is preserved by common Indonesian people, especially among Muslims. For Muslim men, going to mosque for ritual or attending religious sessions means wearing peci. A lot of political party members wear peci in party’s formal gatherings.
The interesting part is, most Indonesians basically don’t aware that peci is initially an Israelites tradition. And non Muslims especially Christians and Chatolics follow such a tradition lately, even though only for certain religious leaders, not common people, even that is not a daily habit. That generally says.

Soekarno, the first president of Indonesia, in his youth as an independence fighter, pioneered wearing peci among political party activists in the beginning of 20th century. Peci in turn became the symbol of rebellion against the Dutch colonial regime.
Indonesia obtained the independence on August 17th, 1945.
